What Is Blob Opera?

Blob Opera is an interactive musical experience where users can manipulate four colorful blobs to create vocal harmonies. Each blob represents a different vocal range:

  • Soprano (highest pitch)
  • Mezzo-soprano (medium-high pitch)
  • Tenor (medium-low pitch)
  • Bass (lowest pitch)

To play, simply click on a blob and drag it vertically to change the pitch and horizontally to adjust the vowel sound it sings. The rest of the blobs will follow suit, creating a cohesive opera-like sound as they harmonize together. No musical knowledge is required—just click, drag, and create your own musical masterpiece!

The tool is powered by machine learning algorithms trained on professional opera singers, allowing players to craft realistic-sounding vocal performances. The simplicity of its controls and its creative freedom make Blob Opera a delightful way to experiment with sound, melody, and harmony.

How to Play Blob Opera: Rules and Features

1. Make a Blob Sing

To get started, select any blob by clicking on it. When you click and drag:

  • Vertical movement: Adjusts the pitch of the note. Dragging the blob upward raises its pitch, while dragging downward lowers it.
  • Horizontal movement: Adjusts the vowel sound being sung. Move left or right to change the vowels from sounds like “ah” to “oo” or “ee,” adding variety to your melody.

2. The Four Blobs’ Vocal Ranges

Each of the four blobs in Blob Opera has a distinct vocal range, contributing to a rich, layered harmony:

  • Soprano (green blob): High-pitched voice for creating bright, soaring notes.
  • Mezzo-soprano (purple blob): Slightly lower than soprano, providing depth and warmth.
  • Tenor (orange blob): Medium-range voice that complements higher-pitched sounds.
  • Bass (blue blob): Deep, resonant notes that add fullness and balance to the melody.

As you move one blob, the others harmonize automatically, making it easy to produce a beautiful, operatic sound with minimal effort.

3. Record Your Creation

Once you’ve perfected your composition, you can record it by clicking the red Record button at the bottom of the screen. While recording, you can continue to move the blobs and manipulate the melody.

When you’re satisfied with your recording, hit the Stop button to finish. Blob Opera will save your musical creation.
